The Right People on the Bus
The Reforms of Peter the Great - Essay Example As indicated by Thomas Riha, he was one of only a handful hardly any pioneers in the realm who had ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ the creative mind and capacity to offer exceptional individual leadershipâ⬠(498). He initiated radical changes in the countryââ¬â¢s instruction military, nearby government and church by redesigning his military in accordance with western gauges, making a naval force secularizing the training part too and practicing more prominent control of the reactionary Orthodox Church contrasted with any of his ancestors. In rundown, his international strategy was forceful thinking about that he, ââ¬Å"...acquired region in Estonia, Latvia and Finland and through a few wars with Turkey in the southâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Peter the Great biographyâ⬠). This paper is an assessment of the changes made by Peter the extraordinary, their belongings, and the hugeness they had on Russia. While trying to debilitate the forces of the common government which he thought about a danger, Pete r permitted the towns to choose their own authorities who might be accused of assortment of income and reproduction of exchange, the genuine force behind the nearby government was Ratusha situated in Moscow. In 1702, an elective board that supplanted the old arrangement of chose sheriffs represented towns, in addition, in 1724; he changed the framework with the goal that nearby governments could have a semi gentry of sorts where towns could act naturally administered under organizations of chose wealthy residents. Regardless, these changes were impressively hard to actualize, practice since nearby land owners and the commonplace senator had colossal impact, and their hang on neighborhood undertakings was amazingly hard to break. Common government was isolated into eight Guberniia, which were going by a Gubnator who had total force from inside the guberniia that were partitioned into locale known as Uzeda, which by 1718 the expanded by twelve in number. Diminish considering the forty Provintsiia, so as to merge his capacity he guaranteed the Gubnators in spite of their nearby self-rule were legitimately responsible to him. For this situation, there were forty divisions to do his requests, be that as it may, since not every one of them had predefined capacities their obligations would in some cases overspill into one another making wastefulness and a remittance for debasement. Peterââ¬â¢s brought together government approach was clear in that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦each of the regions was administered by a named governorâ⬠(Riasanovsky and Steinberg 259). This implied the governors practiced force at his pleasure, consequently were completely faithful to him. Peterââ¬â¢s faith in absolutism guaranteed that the congregation would no longer hold its semiautonomous status, as he was keen on its control since it was a very riches establishment among different reasons. Moreover, he needed access to these assets, and despite the fact that he had attempted to moderni ze it, yet it had wouldn't be changed and stayed unflinching in its customary manners. Besides, the congregation had considerable measures of land, numerous serfs and other ââ¬Å"propertiesâ⬠; therefore, Peter was awkward in light of the fact that it showed up in a manner the congregation was equaling him. So as to control the congregation, Peter wouldn't designate a pioneer of the congregation after Partricah Aldrich passed on and steadily assumed control over the congregation incorporating it into the state. In the year 1701, it was put under an administration office known as Monastyrskii Prikaz, and they paid the priests

Research Of An International Policy Issue Example
Research Of An International Policy Issue Example Research Of An International Policy Issue â" Essay Example > IntroductionHIV is one source of crisis and suffering among many that desperately call for attention. Even in a middle income community in Europe or the United States where people expect to live to old age and cure what diseases they may contract, HIV battles for center stage with other life-threatening diseases. Social movements have been organized to combat patterns of discrimination and stigma associated with the disease and to convince national policy makers and health care providers of the hazard and the enormity of the suffering caused by HIV infection. Even in communities where treatment is insured and comfortable lifestyles affordable, debates concerning the distribution of funds for research and treatment, and the usefulness of early testing and diagnosis and its impact on the quality of daily life, have constituted an ongoing discussion (Angell, 1997). In the poorer countries of the world as indeed in poor areas of the United States, the dilemmas of making choices as to the allocation of scarce resources is more extreme. Should HIV take priority over other infectious diseases? Where should these resources come from and who should receive them? If prevention is the only feasible strategy, should funding be devoted to the prevention of HIV alone or to general public health and community health education efforts? Anthropologists and public health researchers and policy makers have to make hard choices. They have to balance their convictions against the requirements of the situation. Poverty and social disruption force us to evaluate moral issues within a different frame. Questions which appear to lead to one answer in the United States may generate contrasting responses in other situations. Consider simply whether to recommend that a young mother with possible symptoms should be encouraged to seek an HIV test. The Joint United Nationâs Program on HIV/AIDSâ (UNAIDS) charts the AIDS epidemic internationally. It documents its scale and sternness in Africa and the way in which that continentâs population has excessively borne its brunt. on the whole, by the end of the year 1999 it was estimated that 24.5 million people were living with HIV/AIDS on the African continent (UNAIDS, 2000). The prototype of difficulty varies, with those countries in eastern and southern Africa most affected (UNAIDS, 1998. 1 nonetheless, the overall rate of adult occurrence for the continent, at an estimated 8 per cent, is far, far higher than that of any other region of the globe, the next closest being the Caribbean at 1.96 per cent (UNAIDS, 1998). That AIDS has gained so tight a grip on a number of African countries is partially a result of their poverty, as symbolized by deficiencies in nutrition, hazards of living, and lack of access to medical care. In several cases, national indebtedness as well as regimes of structural adjustment has worsened difficulties of securing livelihoods and restricted access to health services, further adding to br oad risk ecology in respect of AIDS. The very nature of the (indistinct) development they have experienced has figured in the spread and entrenchment of HIV/AIDS in these countries. Through its impact on output and the costs it involves, the epidemic is operating sequentially to aggravate further developmental progress, so much so that it has been belatedly recognized by international institutions to be the leading development concern for the present and predictable future. In the Kilimanjaro area of Tanzania, AIDS has been professed by many as being bound up with a âgradually emerging cultural crisisâ"a crisis rooted in transformations that began before the turn of the centuryâ (Jordan, Theresa, 1985). Ideas concerning sex and workâ"reproduction as well as productionâ"have been created in concurrence with changing opportunities and new discourses, chiefly in the lives of youth, who, in seizing upon them and apparently discarding behaviors as well as practices which were pr eviously valued, have been both vilified and placed in positions of greater vulnerability in respect of AIDS. Their elders in turn have seen youthsâ vulnerability to HIV as justification of their own anxiety concerning the obvious abandonment of those former customs which had offered the social cement for the communityâs very survival. In this sense, AIDS has produced a similar unease with changing norms of sexual behaviourâ" although attached to different specific practicesâ"as took place in the North.

The Church And Alcohol Abuse - 905 Words
The Church and Alcohol Abuse The Church s Teaching on the Use and Abuse of Alcohol The Scriptures and the practice of the Church see alcohol as a gift of God. The Psalms praise God who has given us wine to gladden our hearts, (Ps. 104,15) and the Gospel tells of Jesus providing wine for the wedding celebration at Cana. Every Sunday we gather at the altar where at Jesusââ¬â¢ command we offer and receive wine that has become his blood by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures and the Church are also very straight-forward about the abuse of alcohol. St. Paul made it clear in his instructions to the community at Corinth that ââ¬Å"drunkardsâ⬠¦will not inherit the Kingdom of God.â⬠(1 Cor. 6,10) Instead, we are called ââ¬Å"to live sober, upright andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Alcohol in Todayââ¬â¢s Society In our country the inappropriate use and abuse of alcohol has become a normal part of the social scene. It begins in our high schools and even our middle schools where the problem is often phrased by parents and school authorities in the question, ââ¬Å"Should we let the students drink?â⬠Unfortunately, the real issue all too often is intoxication. On college campuses across the nation, Catholic and secular, the problem of alcohol abuse has become so epidemic that it is a major concern for college administrations. The Opal Gem - 1951 Words
Compared to the night sky, holiday fireworks, and the power of erupting volcanoes, opals contain a majesty incomparable to other precious gemstones. One opal can display a vast amount of color with intense display. Extreme color variations in an opal can challenge even the most expensive gems, such as rubies, emeralds, and even diamonds. The birthstone for October and for a coupleââ¬â¢s fourteenth wedding anniversary has a unique history and a list of characteristics that make it stand apart from other gemstones and solidifies itself among the best of all gems. The opal gem has a rich history that spans across many cultures and locations throughout the world. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word ââ¬Å"upalaâ⬠meaning cloud or precious stone (Sanskirt Dictionary). Eventually this word was absorbed into the Roman language; their word ââ¬Å"opalusâ⬠means precious stone. The Greek language also contains the word ââ¬Å"opalliosâ⬠meaning to see color change. Definitions such as these fit the opal gem quite well because both the Roman and Greek civilizations saw the opal as the most valuable gem, only second to emerald. Opal was treasured to the Romans to such an extent that the scholar Pliney praised the opal, saying: For among them the gentler fire of the ruby, there is the rich purple of the amethyst, there is the sea-green of the emerald, and all shining together in an indescribable union. Team Role Paper free essay sample
Working in teams can be a tricky task for a good majority of people, but being able to designate roles to each team member can help promote the teams effectiveness, cohesion and advance the project completion. Designating roles for the members of a group can increase effectiveness because it helps cater specific roles to a specific need that supports the teamââ¬â¢s collaborative effort. Some roles that help in this effort are the leadership role, the encourager, analyst, and a secretary. Each role has a certain responsibility that can ensure success and effectiveness. The leader is one of the most important roles, the leader helps keep the group on task; he/she maintains the schedule of meetings, and deadlines. The encourager helps guide the discussion to maintain a forward momentum. The analyst is the facts checker; their main responsibility is to make sure that information is correct (Indiana University: Bloomington,à 2012). The final role belongs to the secretary, this personââ¬â¢s responsibility is to make sure ideas are recorded and submitted on time. We will write a custom essay sample on Team Role Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Each designated role plays a major part in the effectiveness of the teamââ¬â¢s final project. Effectiveness of a group is paramount in keeping a group on track and maintaining a deadline, but cohesion can be just as important for a team. By assigning roles to individual team members, youââ¬â¢re building cohesion. Individuals possess a variety of strengths and weaknesses which can often complement each other in a team setting. The strengths of one team member may help balance the weaknesses of another. By splitting a project into smaller tasks based on individual strengths, team members are forced to trust and rely on one another to omplete parts of the project. When tasks overlap or are ready to come together, communication between team members helps create unity as the team works toward a common goal. Giving roles to members of a team also creates a sense of ownership and pride in the overall project. When individuals are invested in a project, they are naturally drawn closer to others with a similar goal. According to Stahl (2012), ââ¬Å"Working together, each bringing our gifts and not only valuing, but seeking those of others enables us to create the best possible solutions. â⬠(p. 6) When people see the value others are able to provide to the quality of a project, a mutual sense of accomplishment brings them together. Being able to bring team members together on a project they feel pride in, allows for the best possible work to be put forth. But, not only does taking pride help, but effective meetings and an equal share of responsibility helps keep the team on task. Assigning roles and responsibilities in a team is essential for project completion. When a team leader wants to achieve excellence with the group, the selection of tasks will be optimized if they use all of the memberââ¬â¢s experiences and skills. The single most important goal in team success is having effective team meetings. Team meetings create responsibilities for team members so they are up to date on the project deadline. The more communication and the more goal oriented a team is, the better the outcome of the project. Kennedy (2008) says, it is always important to maintain focus and create responsibilities for the task and team. When these responsibilities and roles are established it creates common expectations. A timeline is essential as well, as far as setting date on completing projects and checking in. Successes of projects come with being responsible, and communication within a team. Being able to designate roles can help tremendously, allowing a team to complete their assignment promptly and efficiently. Team members are more engaged when they have a clear outline of the work at hand, and what is expected of them. As well as feeling like theyââ¬â¢re part of the finished product, no matter what their role turned out to be. By focusing on individual strengths, sharing the work load and allowing for equal input, you push team cohesion and effectiveness to its limits.

Durkheims study of suicide

Many scholars from France, England and Germany (Durkheim, 2001) influenced him. His first monumental work was on the social division of labor. He later published a book on rules of sociological methods. He completed his trilogy by publishing a book on sociological theory of suicide in 1897(Durkheim, 2001). In his book on suicide, he used statistical ingenuity to reject previous theories for giving extra social factors such as heredity, climate as causes of suicide. He came up with the sociological theory on suicide, at the end of 19th century. He established a causal relationship between suicide and social cohesion. He maintains that two social factors: integration and regulation determines the rate of suicide (Alun, 2005). He defines social facts as things external to, and coercive of the actor. He used data collected from different cultures and societies, to support his own findings. He carried the study of suicide in statistical and qualitative approach. He used the theory to explain the scientific method of sociology. Durkheim argues that, suicide is a social phenomenon, and the main causes of suicide were social: the end of overpowering of social relationship. He was concerned with element of a group or structures in the society rather individuals. In order to describe, varying rates among different religious and other groups, he studied the characters of these groups. He was not concerned on psychological traits of the component individuals (Watts, 2006). According to his study, he explores the difference in rates of suicide among Catholics and Protestants (Alun, 2005).Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More He argues that Catholics have stronger social controls than Protestants hence lower suicide rates. He talked about collective currents draining down the channels of social structure. The strength of the social current determines the volume of suicide (Watts, 2006). He talked of factors such as depression, which is an independent non-social cause of suicide. Durkheim established various causes and types of suicide. He argued that suicide was because of social causes. One of the social factors he established is religion. According to him, the rate of suicide was different among different religions. He collected data among Catholics and Protestants. He found out that suicide was low among Catholics as compared to Prot estants. This attributes to Catholics having stronger social controls than Protestants (Durkheim, 2001). The freedom given to the Protestants also attributed to high suicide rate among them. He was concerned about geographical issues in relation to a certain religion. He found that, where a religion was the minority in a particular geographical area the suicide rate was low. In cases where religion was majority in a region, the suicide rate was high (Krieken Smith, 2010). According to him, the value of education was high among Protestants and most of the learned people were associated with suicide. He argues that high education did not directly cause suicide but if it causes shaking of traditional values it may be a source of suicide. The cause of more suicide in protestant was not that they were staunch believers than Catholics. It is because the solidarity among Protestants was weaker than that of Catholics (Thomson, 2002). Durkheim also established the role of marriage in relati on to suicide. He found that suicide was high among bachelors than in married men. According to him, being a bachelor increased the likelihood of committing suicide by 160%, while being married reduces the chance of suicide by 50 % (Fenton, 2006). He also did a research on widows and suicide. He discovered that, widows who were 65 years of age committed more suicide as compared to elderly men at the age of 65(Fenton, 2006).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Durkheims study of suicide specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More He also noted that although widows were more likely to commit suicide than married people were. They were less likely to kill themselves, as compared to bachelors or maiden. Durkheim found that families with children have a lower rate of suicide than families without children. He argues that it is the family cohesion, which is a factor causing suicide rather than marriage. He also established the relations hip between wars or crisis and suicide. During the time, of war and disaster, the rate of suicide was found to be lower than periods without war (Roger, 2000). Durkheim concludes that: society that is more religious has low suicide rate, the stronger the family in society the lower the suicide rate. He also argued that the more integrated the society was the lower the rate of suicide. He referred to this suicide, which is influenced by religion and family as egoistic suicide (Krieken Smith, 2010). This suicide arises because of break down or decreases in social integration and he called it excessive individuation. It occurs when there is poor social integration. This causes people having differences in the value of their lives leading to dissatisfaction. In this case, individuals who are not integrated into social groups are likely to commit suicide. Individuals who are strongly integrated in family structure and social groups do not face such problems hence low suicide rate (Turne r, 2003). Factors leading to egoistic suicide are social facts or currents such as depression and disillusionment. Durkheim also carried a research on altruistic suicide among the less civilized society. This occurs where social integration is too strong hence; a person is forced into committing suicide. It is not the absolute integration that causes suicide, the social forces that go along with it may cause suicide (Turner, 2003). This is where individual needs were considered less valuable than that of a society as a whole. In this case, individuals are not expected to commit suicide. Durkheim cited suicide, such as suicide by old and sick, a widow after death of her husband, a servant after death of a master. This suicide is derived, by believing in large prospective beyond this life (Roger, 2000).Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! He discovered that the rate of suicide was high in the military service as compared to other ordinary people. According to him, he did not expect this result, as there is unity and strong integration in the military. The rate of suicide in the military increases the length of service. According to him, it cannot be due to lack of interest or inability to adapt to military routines. In addition, rate of suicide was higher among NCOS and officers than among the privates. He also observed that, suicide was higher among the elite unit than among the normal unit. Consequently, he found that the weaker the military spirit in a unit, the lower the rate of suicide. He argues that military officers had given so much of individuality in order to adjust to the routine requirements in the military (Thomson, 2002). He also talked about Fatalistic suicide, which occurs where regulation is too strong such as in an oppressive society. People in th is situation will feel no future improvement of their condition. When they are in that state of melancholy, they are subject to social current of fatalistic suicide. They will choose to die rather than to continue languishing in suppression. For instance, people may prefer to commit suicide instead of staying in prison. He argues that individuals who are in an exceptionally strong regulation are likely to commit suicide compared to those in a normal situation (Durkheim, 2001). According to him, there is also Anomic suicide, which is caused by a decline in regulation or disruption of standards and values. It may arise where normal division of labor is interfered. The regulative system is weakened, causing an individual to feel disrupted. In this situation, a person is affected by anomic social currents. He established that, during economic recession, the rate of suicide increased. Also during periods of high growth rate in the economy there was an increase in the rate of suicide. He argued that poverty did not cause people to commit suicide. These situations weaken social values and norms or make people unsure of the future. This in turn, reduces integration and cohesion in the society, leading to increase in rate of suicide (Alun, 2005). Anomic suicide, involves lack of clarity of aspirations, through restricting social ethics. This indicates a failure of economic growth and division of labor, to produce solidarity in the society. In this case, people do not know their roles and position in society. According to Durkheim, social changes may also cause people to commit suicide. During his time, he established that there were strong correlation between suicide and divorce. The rate of suicide tends to increase with an increase in the rate of divorce. He found out that divorced people are likely to commit suicide three times more than married people. He established that divorced people mostly men are left depressed promoting them to commit suicide. This is becaus e; divorcees are not strongly integrated in the family structure and the society (Turner, 2003). Durkheim also established different types of suicide with their characteristics. He identified three basic types. Egoistic suicide is characterized by apathy, lazy melancholy and disappointment of the skeptic person. For Altruistic suicide, he came up with characteristics, such as energy of passion, calm bravery and mystic enthusiasm. Anomic suicide is characterized by disgust, passionately blaming life in general, or even blaming a person (Durkheim, 2001). He also established mixed types of suicide. Ego-anomic is a combination of egoistic and anomic suicide and are characterized by, mixture of excitement, apathy action and daydreaming. He also identified a mixture of anomic and altruist suicide and called it Anomic-Altruist suicide. Its characteristics are internal despair or disguise and calm feeling of responsibility. Finally, he came up with ego-altruist suicide, which is a combinati on of egoistic and altruistic suicide. This is another mixed suicide and, it is characterized by, melancholy by moral strength, apathy and mystic enthusiasm (Durkheim, 2001). Durkheim in his social theory developed the above types of suicide and their causes, to prove that social factors influence suicide. These types of suicide depend on the level of imbalance between two social currents that are social integration and moral regulation. He described the influence, crisis have on society, for instance war leading to increase altruism, economic boom or disasters leading to anomie (Krieken Smith, 2010). Summary and conclusion Emile Durkheim was concerned, with the effect of social factors on suicide. He had a strong view on society, as well as how individuals are influenced by social factors. He sorts to establish the role of social factors, as opposed to economic, biological and psychological factors. The factors that he established were the level of integration and regulation in th e society. Durkheim argues that, division of labor does not lead to society disintegration but changes forms of solidarity. He argues that freedom should not be mistaken with liberation from all restraints, as it will lead to anomie. Freedom is achieved within a set of rules and discipline. Determination of social factors and their influence on individuals may be considered as work of Durkheim (Durkheim, 2001). Criticism Although Durkheim made a significant contribution to sociology, his suicide theory has some problems. He had a particular perspective on human freedom. In this case, it is difficult to establish the basis of human action and motivation. Social factors more or less influence human behavior. He considers deviation from this being abnormal, and this has to be corrected. In his theory, he has little concern about human motivation, and he is highly concerned about large structural issues. His theory has limited possibility for human action. The theory of model of action, by max Weber or more recent approaches such as symbolic interaction may be useful here. He is concerned about ideas relating to sources of human or society solidarity. He totally ignores conflict and power differences among individuals in the society. He ignores anomic and forced division of labor and considers them as unusual. He also uses little time in their analysis. He assumes that, the sense of self is totally influenced by the society around. He fails to recognize anything inherent within an individual (Watts, 2006). His study of suicide has been termed as logical error. He argues that individual behaviors, such as suicide are influenced by aggregate statistic. Some argues that he explains suicide sociologically within a holistic perspective. In this case, he explains variation among social movements in incidences of suicide, not the suicide of an individual (Durkheim, 2001). Introducing psychological factors such as depression, which is an independent non-social cause of su icide, overlooks his argument that social forces affect these variables, and without these forces individuals may not commit suicide. Berk (2006) criticizes micro-macro relations underlying Durkheim suicide theory. Durkheim also assumes that suicide is affected by social forces and ignores natural factors. He is challenged for being positivist. He ignores the subjective interpretation, that social actors may be of different phenomenon, and individuals to influence social forces. His understanding about the relationship between sociology and morality has been termed as conservative. Finally, his argument that individuals are driven by passion for gratification, which cannot be satisfied, is not fully substantiated in his work (Durkheim, 2001). Reference List Alun, R. (2005). All About Radicals in the Japanese Language
All About Radicals in the Japanese Language In written Japanese, a radical (bushu) is a common sub-element found in different kanji characters.à Kanji are the equivalent of letters in Arabic-based languages like English.à Japanese is written in a combination of three scripts: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Kanji originated from Chinese characters, and the Japanese equivalents are based on ancient spoken Japanese. Hiragana and katakana developed from kanji to express Japanese syllables phonetically.à Most kanji are not used in everyday conversational Japanese, although its estimated that more than 50,000 kanji exist.à The Japanese Ministry of Education designated 2,136 characters as Joyo Kanji. They are the characters frequently used. Although it would be very helpful to learn all of Joyo Kanji, the basic 1,000 characters are sufficient to read about 90 percentà of the kanji used in a newspaper.à Radicals or Bushu and Kanji Technically speaking radicals areà graphemes, meaning theyre the graphical parts that make up each kanji character. In Japanese, these characters are derived from written Chinese kangxi radicals.à Every kanji is made ofà a radical, and a radical itself can be a kanji. Radicals express the general nature of the kanji characters, and provide clues to the kanjis origin, group, meaning, or pronunciation. Many kanji dictionaries organize characters by their radicals. There areà 214 radicals total, but its likely that even native Japanese speakers cant recognize and name them all. But for those new to the Japanese language, memorizing some of the important and frequently used radicals will be very helpful as you try to learn the meanings of many of the kanji.à When writing kanji, in addition to knowing the meanings of the different radicals in order to better understand the words they spell, its key to know a kanjis stroke count (the number of pen strokes used to make the kanji) and stroke order. Stroke count is also useful when using a kanji dictionary.à The most basic rule for stroke order is that kanji are written from top to bottom and from left to right. Here are some other basic rules. Radicals are roughly divided into seven groups (hen, tsukuri, kanmuri, ashi, tare, nyou, and kamae) by their positions. Common Radicals The hen are found at the left side of a kanji character. Here are common radicals that take the hen position and some sample kanji characters.à Ninbenà (person)à à à à à à Tsuchihenà (earth)à à à à à à à Onnahenà (woman)à à Gyouninbenà (going man)Risshinben(heart)Tehenà (hand)à Kihenà (tree)Sanzuià (water)Hihenà (fire)Ushihenà (cow)ShimesuhenNogihenà (two branch tree)à à à à Itohenà (thread)Gonbenà (word)à à Kanehenà (metal)à à Kozatohen (time) Theà common radicals that take thetsukuri and kanmurià position are listed below.à Tsukuri Rittouà (sword)à à Nobunà (folding chair)Akubià (gap)Oogaià (page)à à à Kanmuri Ukanmurià (crown)Takekanmurià (bamboo)Kusakanmurià (grass)Amekanmurià (rain) And here is a look at common radicals that take theà ashi, tare, nyou and kamae position.à Ashi Hitoashià (human legs)Kokoroà (heart)à à Rekkaà (fire)à à à à à à à Tare Shikabaneà (flag)à à Madareà (dotted cliff)Yamaidareà (sick) Nyou Shinnyouà (road)à à Ennyouà (long stride) Kamae Kunigamae(box)à Mongamaeà (gate)

The role of affirmative action in society Research Paper
The role of affirmative action in society - Research Paper Example The main reason this topic has been chosen is that we live in very diverse societies and are faced with a very wide range of people every single day. With the increasing change of roles of households and the increasing recessions in place, there is a clear need to understand in depth the steps that are taken to positively represent the women and minorities. Body: Impact of Affirmative Action on Society Considering the beneficiaries of the Affirmative Action it is evident that the cause is very noble. Yes, it is true that the law was introduced and passed for the safety and need of many people in need. However considering the people involved and the amount of damage that it has on the society, there have been a number of doubts that have surfaced. The law has also stirred up a number of questions and has built up a number of doubts about the accuracy of the law. Kate Johns has in a very effective manner explained the same. She explains the case of Martin Luther King who had focused on what the person is worth in terms of skills, behavior and performance rather than on the color of the skin. As quoted by Johns, ââ¬Å"Don't judge a man by the color of his skin, but by the content of his characterâ⬠(Johns). ... ople are actually being judged by their skin color and being place in jobs and higher places of learning due to their skin color, and their ethnic backgroundâ⬠(Johns). This is the concept there several white victims of affirmative action and those from majority groups now refer to as reverse discrimination. Most affirmative action policies have always operated on the assumption of that the group that is on the receiving end of the policies is at an advantage. There are members of this group who are not necessarily under such circumstances. It is hard to believe but there are researchers who have argued that these policies, including those that are founded on racial principles, targets and goals at times have a serious impact on the majority race too. Lately, there have been several instances of white men complaining of reduced opportunities as a result of affirmative action policies that favor women and because of those that favor the minority races. This phenomenon goes by sev eral names and has been employed by a number of groups that criticize the philosophies on which affirmative action policies have been founded. While at the initial stages, the affirmative action policies or frameworks work in a positive way. This is because at this stage, they introduce the terms and define the boundaries for which to sell the concept and idea of gender and racial preferences, goals and targets. However, they ultimately turn their heads and start biting the class of people who had been believed to be strongly protected or favored by the system. It is essential to note that impact of the affirmative action is not completely negative in society and the actual intension of the law is clearly a good one. As explained by Mitchell W. Pearlman and Gregory Daniels, Affirmative action

Is Google maling us stupid Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Is Google maling us stupid - Essay Example Knowledge was now a living and breathing thing that, although not physical in appearance, had a direct and positive effect on the minds of society as people were forced to memorize the spoken word. Each and every bit of information needed to be committed to memory in order to successfully pass it on to the next generation. Then the advent of writing came about and now we had a permanent record of all these teachings to look back on anytime that we needed to. However, this knowledge was now incomplete in its solid form. It was no longer that easy to add new information to it because of the difficulties posed by the writing method of the time. And yet, we somehow managed to continue to grow this databank of information for future use. When typewriters were invented, the world of learning changed forever as it now became easier to understand the written word. Books and newspapers, these were the icing on the cake at the time. It helped people collect knowledge that they deemed important for themselves and their closest family members and friends. But that was not the end of the evolution of knowledge. Instead, it marked only the beginning. Then, television came and allowed us to not only hear about the information that could be gleaned from books, now, we could also see it in actuality and discover the wonders of learning in a totally new way. Thanks to television, we saw the past of the knowledge that we had but also, managed to see its future as well. And this electronic piece of technology was already considered the biggest threat to learning by most academicians and scholars because they felt that the brain was no longer functioning the way it should be. That is, reading and remembering the information that was passing through it. That belief proved to be unfounded and nothing but the fear of people who did not understand how learning and knowledge were fast evolving and becoming an even more relevant part of the daily lives of people. And that academic and sc holarly argument is the very same argument that is now being used by the very same people to prove that the internet and search engines in particular are stunting the growth of the human brain. Rewiring it and turning it into a lazy soft mass in our skulls that cannot be used for anything. Not even remembering simple information. If only these people would get over their fear of technology and the way that it changes the learning process of man for the better, maybe they would finally see that mankind is actually reaching a learning type of maturity that was not available to him before. These people argue that because all the answers to all the questions one has, regardless of how inane it is, can be found through the internet and the use of a search engine then man no longer knows how to research, discern the statements he is reading, and most disturbingly, he no longer has the ability to remember information because he just needs to bookmark the information for future reference. T hus turning our brains into a pile of mush. In reality, the search engines are a highly beneficial tool for those who wish to further learn and gain knowledge about specific topics. Gone are the times of sitting in a dusty old library going through piles of reading material, poring over them for significant information for days on end. These days, knowledge

Its Time for West Virginia to Eliminate Food Tax Essay -- Argumentati
It's Time for West Virginia to Eliminate Food Tax Can you recall an incident in American history involving disgruntled citizens dumping tea into the Boston Harbor? I can. This tea dumping was one of the foremost events of the revolution. Do you remember why these angry citizens dressed as Indians, stormed one of their own boats, and dumped all of the crates of tea into the harbor? The English monarchyââ¬â¢s taxing of the settlersââ¬â¢ tea caused this uprising. Right now, West Virginiaââ¬â¢s government is levying an almost identical tax; the government is taxing the very food that West Virginians eat for survival. Doesnââ¬â¢t the government tax enough each year without taxing something that is required for our very sustenance? According to USA Today, "The government takes more money in other taxes each year than the average American spends on food, shelter, and clothing combined." (Armey, internet) At least the first Americans could choose whether or not they would drink tea. Currently, West Virginians do not have the cho ice whether or not to eat food. Why should we have to pay any more than the store charges us for the food? It is time for the legislature in West Virginia to reform West Virginiaââ¬â¢s tax system and do away with the ridiculous tax on food. Initially, a West Virginia food tax doesnââ¬â¢t seem like such a bad idea, but after contemplating the principles, it becomes more and more unethical. Ethically, why should West Virginians pay tax on food when many other American citizens do not? Consequently, a West Virginia food tax is unethical in that it punishes the poor. Every year in West Virginia, poor children go hungry because their families canââ¬â¢t afford to put food on the table. I conducted an independent survey involving fifty anon... ... One of the widespread and shocking causes of injustices today is racism
In our modern times, the word racism shouldn't even exist. We should know better than to superficially discriminate against a person because of their race. However, the matter of the fact is that racism does exist and it is a prevalent part of our society. In your life time more than half of you are likely to be subject to racial abuse. Even at school racial stereotypes are candidly thrown about but at some point someone will be hurt by it. In Twelve Angry men the initial unanimous vote bar juror 8, in favour of condemning the boy was based solely on the presumptions made from incomplete facts and presumptions about the boyââ¬â¢s personality due to the stereotypes associated with the boyââ¬â¢s South American heritage. Juror #10 is openly bitter and prejudiced. He believes that anyone coming from a poor neighbourhood is less than human. We can see right from the start that the verdict that the defendant is undoubtedly ââ¬Ëguiltyââ¬â¢ is locked in his mind simply because he has a personal grudge against people like the defendant and he separates himself from their culture by using ââ¬Ëusââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëthemââ¬â¢. He believes that their all alike and he knows all about them and how their no good. When he unleashes his bigotry to the others in a speech, the rest of the disturbed jury turn their backs on him disgusted by his outright racism. Today, one in 4 African-American men between the ages of 20 and 29 are imprisoned, on parole, or under the control of the U. S. criminal justice system in some way ââ¬â which is more than there are in college. For Latinos, the figure is 1 in 10. For ââ¬Ëwhitesââ¬â¢, the number is 1 in 16. A recent study has found that 85% of all black American males will be arrested at least once in their lifetimes. The race of the victim has an impact on sentencing as well. In Dallas, the rape of a white woman results in an average sentence of 10 years, while the rape of a Latino woman gets 5 years and the rape of a black woman gets 2 years. Nationally, murderers with white victims are up to 4. 3 times more likely to be sentenced to death than murderers with black victims. So you might say, thatââ¬â¢s America, we donââ¬â¢t need to worry about racism down under. WRONG!! Late 2004, late one night Mulrunji Doomadgee, a 36 year old local of Palm Island of the coast of QLD was arrested for being drunk and died an hour late in a police cell. He suffered massive internal injuries, including a ruptured spleen, four broken ribs and a ââ¬Ëliver that had been ââ¬Ëalmost cleaved in two' from a huge compressive force. ââ¬Ë The officer who arrested him, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, claimed that Mulrunji had fallen on stairs. A pathologist's report claimed that the death of was an ââ¬Ëaccident'. Due to this obvious injustice Lex Wotton another Aboriginal man and others set fire to the local police station, court house and police barracks in revolt. A coroner's inquest found that Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley was responsible for Mulrunji's death, as the injuries were consistent with a beating. However, a court found Hurley not guilty for manslaughter. He has since been promoted and is an Inspector on the Gold Coast. In comparison Lex Wotton is now facing a life sentence in prison after an all white jury found him guilty of ââ¬Ërioting with destruction'. Athough is an extreme example and all cases arenââ¬â¢t as excessive, racism is still prevalent in our society.

A Theory of the Cause of Skin Cancer Essay - 1642 Words
A Theory of the Cause of Skin Cancer This theory of cancer was presented in detail in the book One Answer to Cancer by Dr William Kelley, although certain adaptations have been made. You would be well served to look at the original book available for free on the internet. According to the theory, a person cannot have cancer unless three factors are present. These three factors are: (I) The presence of a certain type of cell that becomes genetically damaged. In the cases of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, this damage may result from excessive sun exposure. (II) The stimulating presence of female hormones. These cause a damaged cell that is cancerous to multiply itselfâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Only when the amount of pancreatin delivered to the mutated cells is insufficient to digest them does the cancer thrive. In the case of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, ultraviolet exposure from the sun, exposure to various toxins, pancreatin unfriendly cosmetics, or an acidic body chemistry may create damage and mutations that eventually overwhelm this healing mechanism or interfere with it. The type of cell that becomes damaged in cancers is a germ or stem cell that occur in relatively small numbers throughout the body. Stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods. Unlike muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells - which do not normally replicate themselves - stem cells may replicate many times. When cells replicate themselves many times over it is called proliferation. A starting population of stem cells that proliferates for many months in the laboratory can yield millions of cells. Some type of damage or disease is normally needed to initiate this proliferation mode. The initation of the proliferation mode depends on both where and when the damage occurred in the cell so that a long period of time can lapse between the damage event and the onset of proliferation. This explains why severe sunburns in childhood can lead to skin cancers much later in life. The Initial Stage of Group Counseling - 702 Words
Summary of Initial Stage of Group Initial stage of a group talks about the early phases of the counseling group and leads the facilitator through the necessary steps and characteristics. The counseling session goes through various characteristics. At the very earliest stage, the participants test the new relationship with the leader and with each other, and the leader, in a way, experiments too with the new relationship with the participators assessing which techniques would be best to employ with them and whether or not there is a match. As with all acquaintances, some work and some do not, and the earliest stages of the group session are a prelude to the future of the success of the group. Exploration is tentative, members learn the rules of this new game and the leader, in turn, learns how to act with participators. As with all groups, members learn to trust each other. They explore their own feelings and that of others and slowly but gradually settle into new relationships. Group cohesion and trust are slowly built,a nd each member carves his or her own specific niche in the group slowly asserting, or not asserting, himself. The earliest stage is one of awkwardness and cautious risk-taking where members gradually open themselves to others; learn to trust or mistrust; to deal with periods of silence, awkwardness, and perplexity about what the group is about. The American Industrial Revolution was immensely consequential and influenced events which have produced the modern society of today. Secondly, this essay will provide descriptions of both, positive and negative, effects that industrialization has had on the lives of Americans and the nation as a whole. We will write a custom essay sample on American Industrialization or any similar topic only for you Order Now Lastly, an analysis of how the Industrial Revolution in American history served as a benefit or a detriment to the nation and the citizens of America. American Industrialization Historically, industrialization of any society marks an experience and phase of historic significance. In addition to practices such as farm production, societies are awarded the process of manufacturing, producing an astounding and substantial impact in every aspect of life (Beck, 1999). As a result of the American Industrial Revolution, modern society benefited from advances in technology, employment increases, and an overall improvement in the quality of daily life. American Industrial Revolution: Positive Effects Developments of industrialization positively affected Americans during the Industrial Revolution. Two advances during this period that had an impact on society and escalated American advancement were transportation and the creation of jobs. Transportation vastly improved the lives of citizens with the completion of roads, canal systems, steamboats, the Transcontinental Railroad and public mass transit (Lipovac, 2011). Innovations in textiles, steam power and iron works produced numerous jobs which brought many individuals looking for work into the cities (Bond, 2003). As people moved from rural to urban areas, cities progressed and expanded which led to vast amounts of innovations, greatly improving the quality of life for citizens as well as improved commerce and economy for the nation as a whole. American Industrial Revolution: Negative Effects The speed at which progression and innovation were occurring led to many negatives as the nation scrambled to adapt. Damage to the environment as well as exploitation of workers are situations that arose during the Industrial Revolution. Factories and industry failed to adequately account for ecological considerations which have led to climate change being a modern day challenge (Han, 2012). Additionally, as employment exploded, the amount of hours worked, pay rates for employees, child labor practices, and workplace safety had little or no regulations (Hopkins, 1982). As time progressed many of the work place issues were addressed as well was the formation of organized labor which gave workers a voice. Despite the vast advantages the American Industrial Revolution provided society, the speed in which changes were taking place provided many opportunities to make mistakes and learn as a nation. Beneficial or Detrimental to America Overall, the events and innovations that created the American Industrial Revolution were immensely beneficial to the America we know today. Although there were many opportunities to learn from the changes the country encountered, the positive impact industrialization had on society was magnificent. Improvements in transportation caused the world as a whole to become a much smaller place as travel and communication greatly improved. Work place conditions and practices eventually became regulated, fair, and safer for the American workforce. Modern American society owes a great debt to industrialization as it was one of the most transformational series of events in the nationââ¬â¢s history. Conclusion Not unlike the prehistoric discovery of fire and the wheel, American industrialization left future generations with a foundation and the tools for unprecedented innovation. The more recent revolution in technology, namely the internet and cell phone devices, owe a debt to the revolutionary period of American industrialization. The United States as well as society worldwide has continued to grow, expand, and continuously innovate in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. References Beck, R. (1999). Fort Pillow Attack Essays - Riverine Warfare,
Fort Pillow Attack THE GRAND FABRICATION It is almost as difficult to find consistent information about the incident at Fort Pillow as it is to determine the moral significance of its outcome. Scholars disagree about exactly what transpired on April 12, 1864 at Fort Pillow, when General Nathan Bedford Forrest captured the fort with his 1,500 troops and claimed numerous Union lives in the process (Wyeth 250). It became an issue of propaganda for the Union, and as a result the facts were grossly distorted. After close examination it is clear that the ?Fort Pillow Massacre_ (as it became known by abolitionists) was nothing of the sort. The 1,500 troops under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest acted as men and as soldiers in their capture of Fort Pillow. It is first necessary to understand what happened in the battle before any judgment can be made. A careful study performed by Dr. John Wyeth revealed the following information: from April 9-11, 1864, troops under the command of Ben McCulloch, Tyree Harris Bell, and Brig. General James Chalmers marched non-stop to Fort Pillow to begin their assault under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Confederate sharpshooters claimed the lives of several key Union officers during the morning assault on the fort. The losses included the commanding officer Major Loinel F. Booth, and his second in command shortly after that. These losses created a complete breakdown of order and leadership among the Union troops within the fort. (251) During the morning engagement, the gun boat the New Era was continually attempting to shell the Confederate forces from the Mississippi, but with minimal success. The Union forces fought back heartily until around one o?clock in the afternoon, when both sides slowed down. Around that time the New Era steamed out of range to cool its weapons. It had fired a total of 282 rounds, and its supplies were almost totally exhausted. During this hiatus in the firing, while Confederate troops waited for supplies that would arrive around three o?clock, Forrestwas injured when his horse fell on him after being mortaily wounded (252). When the supplies arrived, Confederate troops under a flag of truce delivered a message from Forrest that said, ?My men have received a fresh supply of ammunition, and from their present position can easily assault and capture the fort,_ (253). Forrest demanded ?the unconditional surrender of the garrison,_ promising that you shall be treated as prisoners of war_ ( 253). This agreement was refused by Major William F. Bradford using the name of Major Booth, and Forrest was left with no option but to attack (Long & Long 484). Without a word, Forrest rode to his post, and a bugle call began the charge. The soldiers stormed the fort under the cover of sharpshooter fire. The Union spent their rounds on the charging mass, and the second wave was to all intents and purposes a ?turkey shoot._ As hordes of soldiers came over the wall, a considerable number of Union lives were lost to point blank fire, an action that was deemed murder by the northern press. (255) However, it must not be forgotten that those Union troops who died were in the process of reloading their rifles. Even knowing that they were severely outnumbered, they had demanded the fight (Henry 255). By this point most of the Union officers in the fort had been killed, and the remaining troops fled the fort toward the river where they had provisions waiting . There was also a plan for the New Era to shell the Confederate troops in the fort with canister, but the shelling never happened(. Confederate troops were waiting at the bottom of the fort to prevent access to the supplies by the Union forces. With the Union flag still flying upon the fort and Union forces still firing on the run, Confederate troops claimed many more lives on the river bank. It was reported by Colonel FIRST NAME Barteau that they made a wild, crazy, scattering fight. They acted like a crowd of drunken men. They would at one moment yield and throw down their guns, and then would rush again to arms, seize their guns and renew
